You've watched webinar 1 & 2  and you're feeling pumped and prepped to begin the next part of the initiative. Great! All 10 days of the curriculum are ready to be downloaded, reviewed and revised. October 20th is the official initiative kick-off, there is time to practice guided lessons and become familiar with the material.

If you have any questions regarding lesson plans or presentation material, feel free to to contact us.

Day 6

Now that we have learned characters and conversations, it is time to add backdrops and sound. Backdrops change the background and add variety to the animation and sound is an integral part of storytelling. In this lesson, we will  learn how to add backdrops, program them to change, and how to edit sound.

Day 1

The Start From Scratch initiative begins with an amazing lesson on restorative justice and how it applies to a scholars life. Restorative justice is the process of taking responsibility for our actions by identifying whom we have effected and taking steps to repair harm caused by our offensive behavior.

Updated: Day 2

You'll find day 2 is a continuation on the theme of resotorative justice moving into application. Scholars will review the idea of restorative justice and write a letter that address' one of three areas: acknowledgment, apologizing or atonment. The letter will lead into a storyboard that will then evolve into a programmed animation.

Day 3

Time to begin the second part of this initiative! Scholars will start their programming journey on day 3. So much to discover and plenty to create in a very limited time. All part of the process and fun! We'll be diving right in with a video that introduces coding. Please download all 3 items in one folder:

Design Cycle Days 3-6

Design Cycle Days 7-10

Day 7

The hackathon-inspired activities for this unit are designed to challenge scholars to build up a more complex project within a collaborative learning environment. You must encourage risk-taking and persistence, recognizing failures as learning opportunities, focusing on process over product, and cultivating a culture of cooperation and fun.

Day 8

Now that scholars have an idea for their animation and steps to move forward, it’s a good time to receive feedback on ideas. If the scholar has completed planning and designing, they should be allowed to begin programming animation on Scratch.

Day 9

We have moved from skill building, to planning and feedback, and now we are creating. The goal for today is to make sure scholars have a clear project idea, understand how they are moving forward, and begin programming. This includes introducing them to the idea of a programming sprint.

Day 10

The goal for today is making sure scholars are progressing, allowing for one more programming sprint and if time allows wrap up with a showcase. If an animation is not working as a scholar planned, discuss debugging and problem solving.
